Advice from a departing CxO
Eleven things I’ve learned in the past nearly 11 years (and across my career to date).
- Everyone has some level of impostor syndrome – thank it for coming and tell it to piss off.
- Assume good intent – for the most part people don’t set out to trip you up.
- We all want the same thing at the end of the day – success, beating the competition. The outcome matters not how you get there.
- Best thing I ever did (or try to do) is give up needing to be right. It is very freeing – try it!
- Don’t sweat the small stuff.
- Be passionate about what you are doing. If you aren’t pumped up when you jump out of bed in the morning, it might be time to find something new to do (or have a holiday)
- Always be in negative leave – life’s too short to not have holidays
- No one remembers you missing a meeting, but your kids, family, those important to you will remember you missing the important things in their life – cheering from the side line, clapping from the audience ….
- Be kind
- Back yourself – personally and professionally things got way easier and more exciting when I started doing this.
- Be 90% happy and 10% scared – it’s a sure sign you are pushing your comfort zone.
